Styled shoots: Are they worth it for photographers?

As a wedding photographer, you invest a lot into your company. Your equipment alone can cost thousands of dollars. When you factor in your time, energy, and effort your investment is innumerable. Needless to say if you are going to invest in a styled shoot you want it to be worth it. There are many reasons why I recommend investing in the right styled shoot and here’s why:

  1. By choosing to participate in a styled shoot that will appeal to your ideal client, it will allow you to build content aimed towards them. This will help attract the clientele you long to work with.
  1. When you participate in a styled shoot, you are able to network with other vendors. Growing your network will inevitably help you to grow your business. For instance, just this month alone, I was able to book two clients thanks to referrals from vendors I worked with last year.

  1. Styled shoots allow you to have time to be more creative. They give you the opportunity to try new poses, angles, and techniques you may not have the time to perfect at a wedding. Amanda Carmichael of The Amanda Kate Co., who has participated in several styled shoots that I have planned, said this was one of the top reasons why she continues to participate in styled shoots.
  1. Styled shoots allow you to get fresh content. Whether you are building your portfolio or it’s the off season, attending a styled shoot will give you fresh content to share between weddings. This will also help you stay active on social medial and stay in front of your ideal clients

As much as I am a believer in styled shoots, I caution you to look at the host’s portfolio of past styled shoots before you purchase a ticket to any shoot. Credible planners or photographers won’t mind sharing images of past shoots so you can see what you can expect. Anyone can come up with a pretty mood board, but not everyone can execute. A styled shoot should benefit everyone involved with a goal of walking away feeling inspired.

Investing in a styled shoot can help you take your business to the next level by attracting your ideal clients, building relationships with local vendors, fostering creativity and inspiring you to try new techniques. Whether you are an established photographer or are new to the industry, styled shoots are a terrific way to grow your photography business.
